East African Summer School on Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry

August 9-20, 2004
University of Nairobi, Kenya

The following is a short list of computer algebra software that are available (essentially) free that can do computations related to material covered in this course.  If you want to learn to use these programs, I recommend that you find a problem that is appropriate and read the help manuals until you can learn to make the computer solve it.  There are also commercial software for doing similar types of computations (Maple, Mathematica, Scientific Notebook, Mathcad, MathView, Derive, MacSyma) but I do not recommend these programs over the ones listed below.
  1. GAP - A system for computational discrete algebra
  2. Singular - A computer algebra system for polynomial computations
  3. MuPad - A system for doing symbolic and exact algebraic computations
  4. CoCoA - Computations in Commutative Algebra
  5. Macaulay 2 - A system devoted to supporting research in algebraic geometry and commutative algebra
